February is often filled with candy hearts and Valentine’s cards, but at Precious Children Learning Center, we see this month as something much bigger. It’s a time to celebrate the amazing organ that keeps our bodies moving and the kindness that keeps our community connected.
This month, we are focusing on two very important kinds of hearts: the physical heart that keeps us healthy and strong, and the emotional “heart” that helps us care for others.
Growing Big Hearts Through Kindness
Even our youngest learners are capable of incredible empathy. In our classrooms, we intentionally teach “friendship skills” that help children build strong social-emotional foundations.
You might hear us encouraging children to:
Use kind words like “please,” “thank you,” and “you can play with me.”
Practice sharing toys and taking turns.
Recognize feelings in themselves and others.
Offer comfort when a friend is feeling sad.
These small, everyday moments are powerful. When a child shares a favorite toy or gives a gentle hug to a classmate, they are learning what it truly means to have a “big heart.” These early lessons in empathy and inclusion help children develop confidence, compassion, and strong relationship skills that will last a lifetime.
Keeping Little Hearts Healthy & Strong
Heart Month is also the perfect time to talk about how we care for our physical hearts. While our children may be small, their hearts are already hard at work — and building healthy habits now sets the stage for lifelong wellness.
Here’s how we keep little hearts healthy at the center:
❤️ Active Play Every Day
Movement is essential for growing bodies. Whether we are running outside, dancing to music, playing group games, or exploring obstacle courses, we make sure children have plenty of opportunities to get their hearts pumping. Active play strengthens muscles, improves coordination, and supports overall health.
🌈 “Eating the Rainbow”
We talk about how colorful fruits and vegetables help our hearts stay strong. During meals and snacks, we encourage children to notice the different colors on their plates — bright red strawberries, leafy greens, orange carrots, and more. Making healthy food fun helps children develop positive attitudes toward nutritious choices.
🧘 Calm Bodies, Calm Hearts
Just as important as movement is learning how to slow down. We practice simple breathing exercises, like “belly breathing,” to help children calm their bodies when they feel excited, frustrated, or overwhelmed. Teaching children how to regulate big emotions supports both emotional well-being and heart health.
Partnering With Families
We believe that nurturing big hearts is a team effort. Families play a vital role in reinforcing these lessons at home.
This week, we invite you to share a “kindness win” with us. Did your child help set the table? Comfort a sibling? Use kind words during a tough moment? Celebrate it! Recognizing these acts helps children understand that kindness matters everywhere — not just at school.
Together, we can raise children who are not only healthy and active but also compassionate and caring.
Because at Precious Children Learning Center, we believe a big heart truly starts small. ❤️
